Sea Turtles at Costa

Sea turtles have roamed Earth’s oceans for millions of years. During their lifelong journeys, adult females return every few years to the same beaches, often right here in Florida, to lay their eggs. Each nesting turtle lays about 112 eggs in a single clutch and will nest multiple times throughout the season.

About 55 days after nesting, the hatchlings emerge and make a brave dash toward the sea. Of the thousands born each season, only about one in 1,000 will survive to adulthood. Those that do survive will return to the very beaches where they hatched, some 30 to 40 years later, to lay eggs of their own. Protecting Florida’s beaches is essential to ensuring the survival of future generations of sea turtles.
